Best Vijay movies

Ok - I have indulged in Vijay's movies for the last 2 weeks now. I have seen about 40+ films I think! this is definitely Vijay overload, but his movies are super entertaining - so this was hardly a hardship :) I thought it would be nice to list my favorite movies and why they are great below FWIW! Get an einthusan membership and a bucket of popcorn and you are all set to enjoy thanksgiving :)

1) Kadhalukku Mariyathai: I have another post on this movie, and as I said, this was a defining movie for me and at 15 made a deep impression on me. Loved his rare smile even then! And his cultured voice and graceful dance movements!

2) Pokkiri/Sivakasi: Loved both these movies for the comedy and his total rowdiness! If all you want to do is to letch, I highly recommen Pokkiri - he looks edible in this one :)

3) Theri: For some reason, I loved this movie (and also have a post on this below). Vijay as a lover, husband, son, father, IPS officer, murderer, brother - the movie has it all!

4) Sachein: An extra cute tamil rom-com. Vijay and Genelia are a great pair and this movie has some amazingly cute scenes!!

5) Gilli: Love it for the fast pace of the movie! And of course Vijay Prakash's Chellam. The movie shows how Vijay can carry the story single handedly! The other thing I like about the movie is that he doesn't even look at Trisha the entire movie until he drops her in the airport, when it dawns on him that he actually likes her. He has done this very very naturally, and I love that!!

6) Thalaivaa: A godfather remake, serious tone, but Vijay delivers as usual. Love his vanga vanakkamna song

7) Thuppakki: Love the songs in this movie! And Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal are such a great pair!

I still haven't quite figure out why I like so much. My best bet so far is his cute smile, great acting, amazing comedy, his height/figure, his extra-ordinary dancing and his ability to switch between gentlemanliness and rowdiness!

Theri!

Theri was a great movie.. particularly did a great job of highlighting Vijay's acting chops!

My favorite songs: En Jeevan and Eena Meena Teeka
My favorite scene: Vijay delivering the message to the minister

To my latest love, Vijay :)

I have been watching a spade of Vijay's movies these days.. and have absolutely fallen in love with him :) and love being this feeling that has to brim and flow all over you,  I have to spill this out into this blog! The reason I call this love, instead of crush or fan love etc because I have realized that there is no truth to love. Love is about you and your feeling (the object hardly matters, only your interpretation of the object is important!). Regardless, I will list below the things that I think make him special! If you are a lost Vijay who stumbled upon this anonymous blog - you will enjoy reading this :)

Voice - Vijay has a beautiful cultured voice.. he is also a play back singer! His deep yet soft voice reminds me of just one word - "gentleman" He is also really lucky in having Hariharan's  voice suit him so perfectly! his songs are amazing to listen to! He also always wears a watch [the eternal symbol of a gentleman!] the best part is, his laughter is really childlike (high pitched!) and so it adds to the beauty..

Height/figure - I will accept that I am an official sucker for tall men.. but he is not just tall, he is just perfectly proportioned.. in 30 years of cinema, he is still perfectly proportioned! I love that discipline :) The only other actor that I liked this much is SRK (smoked himself to ugliness) and to a lesser extent Maddy (ate himself to the same end!) didn't have that discipline and that makes me mad! As an actor, its the one thing you are expected to maintain!

Skin tone - I love his skin tone. I just think its quintessentially tamil and I love it.. Watching Vijay gives me a sense that if I had married a tam guy, this is how he would have been.

Moustache - Yet another all tamil feature - he sports it proudly and I love him for it. I am very sure that people outside Tamil nadu will not understand its pull.. I just think its unfortunate :)

Smile - He is famous for his smile! its that beautiful... i have seen reviews of guys who fallen for Vijay more than the heroine in the movie :)

Shyness - One of the best aspects of Vijay. Even in an item song, you can sense his hesitancy. Unlike SRK who exudes confidence and touches his women with surety, Vijay exudes confidence but touches his women with diffidence which is so endearing!

Discipline - the one thing that always shone through for me was his discipline. to look the way he does, he needs to be disciplined.. and be positive and have a big ambition.. I admire this more than anything else!

Happiness/Peace - You can sense his peacefulness and his contentedness with life. Its such a beautiful thing... Just watching him makes you feel happy/peaceful.. There probably is a fire inside him, but you can't feel it. You just sense peace :) when he dances he seems to love it, when he is singing, you can feel him enjoying the music, when he is doing comedy, you can see his pleasure.. he is so honest..

Unexpectedness - I have this theory that the reason some actors become so famous is they have an unexpectedness about them. For instance, SRK is faster than you think he would be. Vijay on the other hand is slower than you expect him to be. His smile would be a heart beat later than you would expect. This sense of timing make the comedian, makes the actor. And Vijay's timing is just PERFECT! This makes his action, dance, comedy and romance simply perfect!

A couple of my favorite romantic songs of Vijay:

Kadhalukku Mariyathai

So, this was a defining movie in my life. I was about 15 when this move was released. The name of the movie means "Respect for love". It's a low budget movie and very appealing to mass sentiment of Tamil Nadu for the times.

But the movie is also extra-ordinarily beautiful and propelled the hero (Vijay) to become a tamil super star and the heroine (Shalini) to a stellar short career ending in marriage to a super famous/rich dude! It's about two people who feel drawn to each other in spite of themselves, but their families (one Christian, the other Hindu) for various reasons misunderstand and are keen to destroy them. The two escape to a fishing village where it's decided that they should marry and the law is their only safety. But they decide to separate instead and end up going back to their families. Now their families feel indebted to them and scout around for good matches. Vijay's mom has never met the Shalini and wants an excuse to see her so that she can find a better wife for Vijay.

When they find an excuse to return Mini's chain, the two mothers appreciate how decent the two kids are and how much they cared for each other. When Shalini's mom asks Vijay's mom to bless Shalini as she is going to get married soon (to a guy in US), Vijay's mom goes to her and says "How should I bless her? What should I say? She is my daughter. Giver her to me, I will take care of her as if she were the apple of my eye for the rest of time" and Shalini's mom is shocked but says "Take her! But give her Jeeva back to her" and the movie ends with both the kids thanking their mothers for their understanding.

It's ultra decent and at 15, I was head over heels in love with Vijay and have never quite got over it still :) This particular scene below, where they mutually decide to separate is literally one of my favorite scenes from all of cinema. But you have to watch the movie to appreciate it :) The movie also for me is a reminder that men have an unfair advantage when it comes to acting that women don't! Their adam's apple moving up and down is such a powerful indicator of them literally swallowing their emotions! Vijay uses this beautifully in the movie - his otherwise stoic face doesn't give away anything adding to the overall sense of deep love and loss and his brave acceptance of reality.

Ala Vaikuntapurramlo

There are few movies that I have admired in all aspects (that are not manirathnam's that is!).. but recently this Telugu movie made that...
