Costumes in Mani Rathnam Movies

Interestingly enough, there has been at least one other very detailed blog entry on this topic :)

If you are an ardent fan of mani-rathnam like I am, you might have noticed that the heros/heroines in his movie have never looked better in any other movie ever. He casts them in the best light possible. Shah Rukh and Preiti Zinta in Dil se, Revathi in Mouna raagam, Madhavan and Shalini in Alaipayuthey comes to mind.

Let's talk heroines. He follows certain simple rules: Big bindi, Starched cotton saries, Contrasting deep colors (black sari with red blouses, yellow with green blouse etc), simple hairstyle - a loose pinnal. He really underscores the reality that it doesn't take much to show case the Indian woman's beauty - our skin tone lends itself to rich colors particularly earthy tones. And there is an elegance to cotton that no other material can rival. Through simple colors he elevates the beauty of these heroines to new levels.

Heros: My all time favorites have always been Shahrukh khan and Madhavan. They both look simply beautiful in Dil Se and Alaipayuthey. The bright reds and yellows that these men sport throughout these two movies are simply beautiful.

The next time I go to India, I am buying some cotton saris :)
